The church was built in 1838 and is Grade II listed. The project was overseen by John Falconer Associates of Cheltenham and was part-funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The work included the re-roofing of the main nave roof and the east elevation apse. The renewal of the wide parapet lead gutter using sand-cast lead, some stone repairs and replacement of plastic rainwater goods using cast iron was also part of the contract. Internally in the apse, defective plasterwork (caused by water ingress) was replaced with haired lime plaster and the whole area redecorated using breathable clay paint.
As Principal Contractor and working under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM 2007), we completed the project successfully, on time and just under budget. There were two important criteria in the execution of the project: first, to maximise the number of Welsh slates being stripped, in order to reuse as many of the existing slates on the new roof; secondly, to minimise disruption to the church itself, in order to permit the church to continue to carry out its daily functions (e.g., services, funerals etc.). The project was successful on both counts.
“When we received the Quinquennial Report of our church we were faced with the prospect of a huge job of work. . . . Several names were suggested and Nick Miles was eventually appointed to oversee the work. I think it’s one of the best decisions ever made from the first site meeting to the end of the line when we discussed snagging. . . . Nick was very quick to reply to any query, complaint or observation. All the different craftsmen were skilfully brought together and things flowed together well. . . . It was wonderful to be able to leave the job in the capable hands of a project manager who knew what he was doing and did it.” – spokesperson for Holy Trinity Church
“Nick Miles Building Contractors provided a thoroughly professional service as Main Contractors for the recent works at this church to the roof and associated high-level masonry. The work was carried out to the agreed budget and timetable and was closely managed throughout by Nick Miles. I would be pleased to work with Nick Miles and his team on other projects in the future.” – architect on the Holy Trinity Church project
